Residential Design Build

JAMOBOHO BEACH COTTAGE

Japanese Modern Bohemian the playful term we created  for this modern beach cottage that resides beside the Naramata Creek. The setting could not be more idyllic with gardens, access to the beach and the local amenities of the Naramata Hamlet. The design potential was organic and infinite, the criteria Modern・Functional・Family.

Exterior walls were re engineered with Glass Curtain Walls weaving the perennial gardens into the fabric of the cottage interior. A Bike Shrine became function art within the living space and will reside with the distinctive west coast sculptural art once the 2022 renovations come to fruition.

A classic cottage became an "Industrial Cottage" in 2006, nick named the "Surf Shack".  Janet Watson of ice reinterpreted classic victorian design, utilizing rusted metals, carbon fibre, hand cut masonry  veneers, architectural salvage and recycled T&G wall systems. Often with her own hands, she reclaimed the original V groove walls, cut, chipped and hauled masonry, resurrected point loads to create a home  for her, and her son Griffin. A home abundant in history and old cottage charm with an organic energy came to fruition.

See Before and After

This creative vision was stimulated by an opulent landscape with a view to the Rockies and dramatic connections to architectural salvage. The site is nestled into a natural ampitheatre, design was driven by the client request to eliminate 8' ft ceilings  and the antique salvage that was selected, procured and incorporated by Janet Watson of ice. Initially , the ice Design Build had extreme site conditions with record rainfall of almost 100 years, three mysterious underground streams and structural loads, that were complicated. It was an excellent adventure to team solutions as a builder and a designer.
